A unique workshop will soon be taking place, which will be followed by a neighborhood walk. These two events will be held as part of the project „Plac Grunwaldzki: Everyday Life Archive”, which we are implementing as part of the KPO program for culture.
In two events, we will focus on an icon of our neighborhood and a person inextricably linked to the complex of clinics you pass every day driving along Curie-Skłodowska Street. Jan Mikulicz-Radecki (born May 16, 1850, in Chernivtsi, died June 14, 1905, in Wrocław) was an outstanding surgeon of Polish-German descent, a professor at universities in Kraków, Königsberg, and Wrocław. He revolutionized surgical techniques (including suturing a ruptured stomach ulcer) and introduced modern asepsis and antiseptics; he is considered one of the pioneers of 20th-century surgery in Europe.

A walk in the footsteps of the outstanding surgeon Jan Mikulicz-Radecki with Małgorzata Urlich-Kornacka
- When? November 19 (Wednesday), 3:30–5:30 PM
- We will provide the meeting point closer to the date of the walk.

During the workshop, residents of Wrocław will have the opportunity to delve into pre-war Adressbuches, or old address books. By participating in the workshop, they will take on the role of real-life archivists and researchers. They will comb through historical books to find information about surgeon Jan Mikulicz-Radecki, who worked at the Surgical Clinic, located in the building currently housing the Medical Discovery Center of the Wrocław Medical University, and in secret locations around Grunwaldzki Square.
During the classes, participants will be able to not only learn about the history of their former medical neighbor, but also discover information about the places and buildings in which they live today – finding traces of former tenants and their history.
The workshop will be led by Alan Weiss on the initiative of Breslau looks out from under the ground. The workshop is a fully booked event. It will be held in the library at the Scientific Information Centre at 2-6 Marcinkowskiego Street. It's the perfect place to discover pre-war address books and search for old address books that hold fascinating stories about the inhabitants of Wrocław.
The project will continue with an architectural walk, during which visitors will be able to see existing and defunct tenement houses associated with the surgeon's workplace and residence. The walk will be led by Małgorzata Urlich-Kornacka, a city guide in Wrocław and tour guide in Lower Silesia and Germany.
The walk is an event for which there are no more available places.
The event is organised by Fundacja Ładne Historie – the operator of the Local Activity Centre in the Plac Grunwaldzki housing estate, and the meeting partner is the Medical Discovery Centre of the Medical University of Wrocław.

The project is co-financed by the European Union under the European Recovery and Resilience Facility (NextGenerationEU) as part of the National Recovery Plan. #KPOdlaKultury
