Monday, February 13th, marked the deadline for submitting applications for the 2023 Wrocław Participatory Budget. At Grunwaldzki Square, we decided to support two initiatives that already have their own numbers: 200 for the "Green Plac Grunwaldzki" neighborhood project and 204 for the cross-neighborhood project "On Two Sides of the Oder — Green Areas on Pasteur and Bartel Streets." Both projects have been submitted and are awaiting initial feedback from City Hall.
Plac Grunwaldzki is a development brimming with enormous potential—green spaces along the Oder River, expansive courtyards, busy intersections, and major transportation axes in the city. These are just some of the public spaces commonly associated with Grunwald, but unfortunately, some require rapid and decisive infrastructure intervention. Who among us, residents of Grunwald, doesn't know a yard in need of renovation or a sidewalk in need of a refresh? The Ładne Historie Foundation team is listening carefully to your opinions and recommendations regarding areas where we can collectively leverage the potential of the Wrocław Participatory Budget for our beloved neighborhood.

Towards an accessible and sustainable housing estate in Wrocław's Śródmieście district
The project initiated in November 2021 "„Citizen Workshop – Green Plac Grunwaldzki OD NOWA”" allowed us to adequately prepare for the creation of conceptual concepts for Grunwald. Since the project's inception, we have conducted 27 meetings to examine the resources and needs of the estate, learn about the habits of its users, and design and consult on solutions to the barriers and problems identified during discussions and meetings with the local community.
Thanks to the involvement of the working group and cooperation with the project partners, who are Association of Polish Architects – Wrocław Branch, Menthol Architects, Rada Osiedla Plac Grunwaldzki and Habitat NOW Student Science Club, we managed to create a comprehensive response to the needs of residents living near the intersection of Ładna, Miła, Grunwaldzka, Górnickiego, and Benedyktyńska streets. The project's beneficiaries include local residents (elderly, adults with children, and youth), as well as a wide range of students studying in the area and visually impaired visitors to the nearby PZN headquarters.
You can find a presentation on the "Green Plac Grunwaldzki" project [WBO No. 200] HERE. The scope of the project includes, among other things, installing bicycle racks and neighborhood benches, planting trees, shrubs, and flowering plants, raising pedestrian crossings and installing the necessary signage for the blind and visually impaired (lowering curbs at pedestrian crossings, installing attention areas and guide strips along sidewalks and across the road), as well as installing small-scale architecture and a recreational and integration pavilion with a rainwater tank.
Activities around the "Citizen Workshop – Green Plac Grunwaldzki OD NOWA" also support Pasaż Grunwaldzki – a shopping mall located in our estate and Academic Radio LUZ – a non-commercial radio station operating at Wrocław University of Science and Technology.
Recreation and integration on both sides of the Odra River – Pasteur and Bartel
The downtown area along the Oder River is a paradise for Wrocław residents—an oasis of greenery, a respite from the hustle and bustle, and a treat for the eyes. The coast, boulevard, and park along the embankment are places for regeneration, socialization, and fun. Residents of all ages, students, and those who actively spend their free time—cycling, running, or walking—enjoy them. It's time to take care of the coastlines located between Szczytnicki Bridge and Zwierzyniecki Bridge!
Thanks to numerous meetings and conversations with residents of the Pasteur area, we now know what the waterfront needs in this area. The section between Plac Grunwaldzki and Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie Streets is one of the last stretches of waterfront in the Śródmieście district requiring rapid and efficient renovation. The location of both sites – the Pasteur square and the square near Zwierzyniecki Bridge – is attractive and publicly accessible. As a walking and recreational space, it serves not only the residents of Śródmieście and Wielka Wyspa (Great Island), but also the entire city community, including tourists visiting our city.
The project includes, among other things, the renovation of the pedestrian and bicycle path, including the creation of a path and resurfacing, the renovation of the stairs leading to the coast from Karola Marcinkowskiego Street, the installation of park lighting with motion sensors along the path, the renovation of the railing, and, of course, numerous plantings of trees, shrubs, and flowering plants. All this to restore one of Wrocław's most important cycling and walking trails to its former glory!
The project "Local Activity Center Plac Grunwaldzki OD NOWA" is co-financed by the Municipality of Wrocław (www.wroclaw.pl).
„Civic Workshop – Green Plac Grunwaldzki OD NOWA” is a project financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway from the EEA Grants under the Active Citizens Programme – Regional Fund.
