This is the fourth edition of the "Outdoor Studio" series. This fall, we invite you to participate in two walks exploring the pre-war and post-war architecture of the Plac Grunwaldzki housing estate. Our guide will be Piotr Kmiecik, an architect and resident of Grunwald. This project is being implemented in collaboration with the Wrocław Social Cooperative.
We continue our guided tours of Grunwaldzki Square with residents of the estate. We're giving voice to those connected to Grunwald who know the estate inside and out.
This time, our autumn tours are dedicated to architecture – both pre-war and post-war. Piotr Kmiecik, an architect, architectural historian, and academic, will reveal unique tenement houses and unfamiliar places. The walk will be a subjective look at the neighborhood. Together, we'll search for historical architectural structures (including modernism!), street art, and even trees in the public space. There will be no shortage of interesting facts – including personal, downtown legends and sentimental stories.
What, when and where?
- Between Disasters | September 14 (Thursday), 5:30-7:30 p.m.
The main theme of the walk won't be solely construction disasters, although it will indeed begin and end with a disaster. Instead, we'll focus on a subjective selection of architectural structures – those important, interesting, and at the same time completely underappreciated. We'll stroll along the northern part of Grunwaldzki Square, which has become a laboratory of post-war architecture. Naturally, there will be plenty of post-war modernism, but there will also be plenty of 19th-century influences, and perhaps even something older. Among the streets and buildings, we'll be on the lookout for street art in the broadest sense.Start: Stanisław Tołpa Park, corner of Wyszyńskiego and Prusa Streets
Finish: Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology, University of Life Sciences, Grunwaldzki Square 24a
Directions to the meeting point: „Prusa” stop by tram numbers: 1, 4, 33, 70 or „Ogród Botaniczny” stop by tram numbers: 2, 10, 17, 19, 23, 33 or by bus numbers: A, N, 106, 111, 115, 128, 148.
- Between the Bridges: About Wrocław Medicine, But Not Only There | September 21 (Thursday), 5:30-7:30 PM
Pasteur's Embankment is a brief history of Wrocław's science, education, and medicine – and much of the walk will be about just that. We'll pay attention not only to what's on it, but also to what's visible from it. Searching for interesting facts, we'll walk from bridge to bridge along both banks of the Old Oder. Especially since the eastern bank of the river holds a further history of medicine, science, and education – so it's not a good idea to miss it. We'll also occasionally conjure the ghosts of long-vanished structures.Start: Jan Mikulicz-Radecki monument in front of the entrance to the building of the Department of Gastrointestinal and General Surgery of the Medical University, 66 Curie-Skłodowskiej Street
Finish: Anti-aircraft slots, Wyspiański coast
Directions to the meeting point: stop "Kliniki – Politechnika Wrocławska" by tram numbers: 1, 2, 4, 10, 16, 19 or by bus numbers: 115, 145, 146, 315, 345.

About the presenter:
Dr. Eng. Arch. Piotr Kmiecik — architect, architectural historian, academic teacher, and some might say a bit of an archaeologist. For over a decade, he has been conducting and co-conducting archaeological and architectural research in Lower Silesia, especially Wrocław, with considerable success. A Wrocław resident by choice, a resident of Grunwaldzki Square also by choice. A fan of military architecture, 19th-century architecture, and post-war modernism, a fan of Wrocław's Manhattan. A street art enthusiast.
