After the winter break, it's time to return to your favorite guided walks! "Outdoor Workshop" is the third edition of our walking tours around Grunwaldzki Square. This time, residents of the estate will discover the many facets of Grunwald. This project is being implemented in collaboration with the Wrocław Social Cooperative.

In this new installment of the series, Grunwald residents will serve as guides through Grunwald. We're giving voice to those connected to Grunwaldzki Square – long-time residents, local activists, and those who know Grunwald inside and out. Participants will learn about the neighborhood, its unusual and quite ordinary stories, and its places from the perspective of the local community. Let's discover Plac Grunwaldzki OD NOWA!

During the 4 planned events in the spring season, participants will learn about the importance of the Oder River in the Grunwald ecosystem and the important role of trees and mushrooms in the urban space, as well as learn about the histories of places, buildings, service premises and people from a hundred years ago and the period just after the war.

What do you need to do to take part in the walks?

We'll focus not only on the histories of the places and buildings, but also on the memories of the residents of the northern part of Grunwald. We'll search for bullet holes in the facades of pre-war tenement houses, hear about the marches of the displaced to Sępolno, gather dry bread for horses, and learn about what was found in the current location of the Plac Grunwaldzki OD NOWA area. Scientists, medics, naturalists, and entrepreneurs are among the few who shaped the northern part of Grunwald for nearly a century. • Odra and Grunwald – a surprising walk through places we supposedly know | [RECRUITMENT CLOSED – NO PLACES AVAILABLE]
11/05, 17:30-19:30 (Thursday) | gathering in front of the main building of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, from the Odra River side, Wybrzeże Stanisława Wyspiańskiego 27
The Plac Grunwaldzki estate is surrounded on almost every side by the Oder River. The river not only serves as a natural boundary but also creates a unique ecosystem that is home to animals and plants. We will rediscover places we supposedly know, but we will also learn how the river influences the lives of Grunwald's residents. During the walk, we will also talk about the importance of water retention for the city's microclimate, the role of the river in the context of future climate change, heat islands and smog, and how each of us can easily take care of the Oder. Arrival at the meeting point – "Kliniki – Politechnika Wrocławska" stop by tram numbers: 1, 2, 4, 10, 16 or by buses: 115, 145, 146, 315 or "Plac Grunwaldzki" stop by tram numbers: 1, 2, 4, 10, 16, 33, 70 or by buses: 111, 115, 116, 121, 131, 145, 146, 149, 151, C, D.

During the event, we will hear stories about the unique trees of Grunwald, determine their approximate age, height, and other important parameters. We will reminisce about exceptional specimens that no longer exist but were an interesting feature of our neighborhood's landscape, and we will also consider the future of the oldest trees in Grunwald. We will use examples to discuss the impact of weather conditions and air pollution on the health and condition of trees. Participants will also learn basic methods for identifying and labeling fungi, and will learn about the importance of tree-destroying fungi (so-called hubs) and their habitats. Arrival at the meeting point – the "Kliniki – Politechnika Wrocławska" stop – by tram numbers 1, 2, 4, 10, or 16, or by bus numbers 115, 145, 146, or 315.

Joanna Suchorzewska – was born a few years after the war in the apartment where she lives to this day. In summer, her kindergarten was a small square and courtyard, and in winter, the snow-covered hills above the Oder River, often the courtyard of the University of Technology, as was common back then – without adult supervision. The area held no secrets from the ubiquitous children. She continued to explore the area and the city in elementary school. As an adult, she spent a lot of time in the State Archives, searching for materials related to Plac Grunwaldzkiego, and a folder she accidentally found on one of the shelves proved to be a treasure trove of knowledge about the northern part of the estate in the 1920s. During the walk, she will share her own memories, those of her interlocutors, and material from the archives.

Dr. Eng. Włodzimierz Kita – Phytopathologist and mycologist who, for 47 years, has been involved in protecting plants from diseases, primarily those caused by fungi, as well as writing forensic and other expert opinions on the diagnosis of plant diseases, the causes of dieback, and the destruction of trees in parks and urban areas. He is interested in the study of airborne fungi and their impact on human and plant health, diseases of agricultural plants and those found in home and allotment gardens. For 30 years, he has been analyzing the impact of habitat and weather conditions on trees and shrubs. He has lived on Łukasiewicza Street since 1951, observing and analyzing the changes taking place here, especially in the context of the impact of urban pollution and road infrastructure reconstruction on urban greenery. Among his non-professional interests, he photographs diseased plants, the fungi that inhabit them, and interesting natural phenomena. He travels extensively and often spends time outdoors.
