If you've been following our activities, you've probably noticed our fascination with the history of the Recovered Territories and know that post-war stories are an important part of our region's identity. One of the activities we're implementing to better understand the shared fate of our community is the "Plac Grunwaldzki – An Untold Story" project, in which we explore the past of this part of Wrocław with the residents of Grunwald. We collect and preserve memories, seek out anecdotes and stories, and initiate conversations about the German-Polish history of Lower Silesia.

Where did the idea for this initiative come from? It all began with a neighborhood walk two years ago. While exploring one of Grunwald's main streets together, it turned out that the students participating in the event were unaware that during the Siege of Breslau, today's Grunwald axis had become a runway for aircraft carrying supplies to the German army. Our guide then began to recount the mass demolitions around Kaiserstrasse, the several thousand victims who died during the clearing of the area for the airport, and the tragic living conditions in Festung Breslau. As it turned out, these facts were completely new to many of the younger generation. Meanwhile, seniors who have lived in the neighborhood since birth use the "great void" left by the demolitions around today's Grunwald axis as a starting point for reminiscing, pulling out archival photographs, and recounting what life was like in the neighborhood during their youth. Our team felt that we needed to capture this thread and create a program of activities around it that would enable us to preserve these memories, deepen our knowledge of the estate's past, and popularize this knowledge among younger generations.

From the beginning of 2024, we are continuing our activities and encouraging Wrocław residents to get involved. We are using simple and engaging methods. We invite you to talk and capture the memories of people connected with Grunwaldzki Square (you can find them in the "Grunwaldzki" tab). INTERVIEWS). We organize creative meetings and workshops, where participants can not only acquire new skills and create something with their own hands, but also have the opportunity to share memories and discuss the complex post-war history of our city. Together with other non-governmental organizations and partners from the academic community we use the medium of film as a tool to initiate conversations about the effects of war and build relationships between the German and Polish communities. The meetings and discussions within this project are full of emotion, memories, and friendly emotions, even if the topics we discuss are difficult and sad.

You're probably curious about our plans for this project in the coming quarters of 2024. Several exciting events await us – today we're revealing a little, and we'll announce the details and registration in the spring. We're hosting six workshops divided into three series: collecting memories and mapping them in the context of the estate's topography; working on a neighborhood art zine; and film workshops, in which we'll collaborate with the local community to create a short audiovisual film about the memories and history of our estate. That's not all! For the first half of May, we're planning a unique walk through the early years of life in post-war Wrocław. The collected columns will be complemented with a text about Kaiserstrasse itself and its history by Piotr Lis, a researcher and author associated with the series.
