A housing estate for art

Can art be our companion in daily life? What role does it play in our neighborhood's public spaces and how does it impact our well-being? Does it transform the reality around us and improve our quality of life, or is it merely a supplement to our functioning in the city?

We want to find the answers to these questions with you! Dear neighbors, we invite you to participate in a new series of creative and stimulating activities at the Plac Grunwaldzki estate – "An Estate for Art"! As part of the pilot edition of this project, we have planned family creative workshops, walks during which we will explore our neighborhood together with people with various disabilities, and a series of Thursday activities in selected courtyards in Grunwald!

Registration for family walks and workshops is done via the online form available at the link: bit.ly/ODS2022REGISTRATION FORM. Participation in the backyard activities does not require registration; simply arrive at the designated times. Participation in events as part of the "Osiedle dla Sztuki 2022" project is free.

Our walking tours are especially dedicated to people with visual and hearing disabilities. During the walk on July 30, 2022, we will provide the necessary equipment for people with visual disabilities, and during the walk on August 6, 2022, we will provide interpretation into Polish Sign Language. The substantive and organizational partner for this activity is Foundation for the Development of Audio Description "KATARYNKA"„.

WORKSHOPS:

• July 30, 2022, 2:30 PM | Family creative workshops "A city for art – why do we need art in the neighborhood?" | Irena Sendler Square
  Instructor: Agata Iżykowska-Uszczyk | Children aged seven and over can participate in the classes

  Can we encounter works of art while walking around the city? Can you think of any examples? A sculpture? A mural? Or perhaps a contemporary installation? Together, we'll search for works of art around Grunwaldzki Square – to help us remember where each work is hidden, we'll create a map. In the empty spaces, we'll create our own artistic creations.

• August 6, 2022, 4:30 PM | Family creative workshops "The Art of Survival" | Irena Sendler Square
  Instructor: Natalia Jerzak | Children aged seven and over can participate in the classes.

  Inspired by the artists' work, we will arrange the space of Irena Sendlerowa Square through our own creative endeavors. We will use colorful yarn and string to wrap them around tree trunks. This will require collaboration and planning. On equally sized cards, we will write what a safe and cozy place means to us. What should the ideal play hideout look like? What elements should it include? We will hang the cards with the answers on our Wish Tree, which can be symbolically identified with the memorial tree planted by the square's patron saint at Yad Vashem in 1983.

Both workshops will take place at Irena Sendler Square, located between Łukasiewicza, Smoluchowskiego, and Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie Streets. In case of inclement weather, the workshops will be held at the Plac Grunwaldzki OD NOWA location (ul. Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie 63a, first floor, courtyard).

We provide Ukrainian translation during the workshops, and we cordially invite Ukrainian families living in the city center who want to spend their free time in a creative and imaginative way. Participating in both workshops is also a great opportunity to get to know your neighbors!

  The Plac Grunwaldzki estate, located within the Śródmieście district, is not only a major transportation hub. This part of Wrocław was named after its centrally located square, but it also boasts many more interesting sites that hold extraordinary stories from Wrocław's history. It was here that the horrors of war were most vividly revealed, but it was also the site of Wrocław's academic life's rebirth after 1945. During the walk, we will revisit the Plac Grunwaldzki estate as an example of Wrocław's complex and fascinating history and a place where the spirit of Lviv is particularly felt. The walk begins right at the gateway to the estate, at Wrocław's most famous river crossing – the Grunwaldzki Bridge. We will then learn about the fate of the Lviv Madonna, who guards the estate's residents, and the story of the exceptional physician Hanna Hirszfeld. There will also be stories about rowers, a building resembling a slice of Swiss cheese, a grand castle for university students, and luxurious townhouses in a fashionable district. The walk will conclude at the "Greek" monument to surgeon Jan Mikulicz-Radecki.

  The 1970 Visual Arts Symposium in Wrocław was a veritable explosion of conceptual art. This explosion also reached Grunwaldzki Square, where spectacular works by Anna Szpakowska-Kujawska and Jerzy Rosołowicz were designed. Although these works were never created, this conceptual event left a legacy in the square. What other surprising untapped concepts does "Grunwald" hold? During this walk, we will examine unrealized concepts within the square since the 1970s.

  To get to the meeting point – stop „Rondo Reagana” by tram numbers: 1, 2, 4, 10, 16, 33, 70 or by bus numbers: 111, 115, 116, 121, 131, 145, 146, 149, C, D. There is a parking lot at the intersection of Wybrzeże Grunwaldzkie and Hoene-Wrońskiego Street.

You know us well and we love getting to know you in your backyards. We enjoy the atmosphere of drawing and building cardboard castles together, we love blowing bubbles, and we love playing with the youngest residents of our neighborhood. This year, we're back with backyard activities and will be appearing in three quarters:

• in the yard between the Stanisław Wyspiański coast and Hoene-Wrońskiego Street
• on the pitch located between Grunwaldzka, Ładna and Reja streets
• in the yard between Pasteur Street and Grunwaldzki Square

During the animation we will use the educational package created as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Wrocław '70 Art Symposium – our educational guide will be "‘It starts in Wrocław. 70/20 Symposium Action Scenarios”, which was prepared by the Education Committee of the Working Group Wrocław 70/20 Symposium.

Workshops are led by:

• Agata Iżykowska-Uszczyk Agata Iżykowska-Uszczyk is a cultural studies scholar, educator, museum professional, and cultural animator. Since 2015, she has been implementing and co-organizing projects that integrate people into the cultural life of Wrocław. She is the author of the workshop series "Art Seeks the Senses" and "Touch the Museum," which opens the door to the practice of exploring contemporary art through all the senses. She serves as the Accessibility Coordinator at the National Museum in Wrocław.
• Natalia Jerzak – Graduate of the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, majoring in graphic arts, winner of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage award for her master's thesis entitled "Contemporary Textile Printing in Poland." Honored by the International Print Triennial Association in Kraków with the title "Best Diploma: Graphic Design 2015." Initiator of the "SitoOgrodnicy" screen printing studio, run by people recovering from the homelessness crisis, she received the "Pokolenie W" award for this project in 2017. Her fabric collection, "Polskie Lato," printed with SitoOgrodnicy, was presented in the Polish Pavilion at the international design fair "London Design Fair" in September 2017. She was one of the "30 Creatives of Wrocław 2018.".

The walks are led by:

• Ewa Pluta – a cultural worker and art historian, professionally associated with the Wrocław City Museum and the Art Transparent Foundation. A spokesperson, curator, accessibility coordinator, and occasional guide, she considers Wrocław the most wonderful city in the world (despite its lack of a sea). She compulsively explores its history to uncover the yet-to-be-discovered threads. She is particularly interested in Wrocław's herstory and queer history. A proud resident of Ołbin, she has a dog and a cat.
• Adam Pacholak — PhD candidate in Art Sciences at the University of Wrocław. His research interests include post-war and contemporary art and architecture. Author of the book "The Electronic Brain of the City. The Idea of Modern Wrocław and the ZETO Building." Winner of the Mieczysław F. Rakowski competition for the best master's thesis on the history of the Polish People's Republic, held by the weekly "Polityka," and the "Common Space is a Value" competition held by the NIAiU for the best thesis on architectural theory. Information activist and member of the Karyatyda Collective.
