The first six months of the "Plac Grunwaldzki – An Untold Story" project are behind us! Thanks to funding from the EVZ Foundation, we are exploring the fate of today's Grunwald Axis – from the construction of the airport in Festung Breslau, through the many years of the "great void" and various development plans, to the present day. By implementing this project, we want to commemorate the tragedy that befell several thousand people on Kaiserstrasse in 1945, and on the other, invite you to share how the demolition of the buildings between the then Adolf Hitler Brücke (now Szczytnicki Bridge) and Kaiserbrücke (now Grunwaldzki Bridge) impacted your lives.

We've always been most interested in stories that can be viewed from many different perspectives, and they're not about historical truth, but about the memory of place. During one of our walks, we stopped by the D1 building of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, and a discussion began among the participants about the exact location of the Lutheran Church (Luther Kirche), which was blown up in March 1945 due to the construction of a temporary airport. Some remember playing on the church's ruins, continuing towards the Grunwaldzki Bridge, while others point to a specific spot near the D1 building. Human memory can be fallible, but for us, it's these subtle differences that are of immense value – we want to learn how the local community remembers the void from which our neighborhood's name arose.

The project started in April 2023 and since then we have implemented several modules - we met during walks dedicated to the transformations on Kaiserstrasse (now Plac Grunwaldzki street), we talked a lot with each other, collecting your memories during interviews, in July we carried out the first of a series of family workshops, and in articles tab We published several columns written by our guides.

We would like to thank Dr. hab. Marcin Cesarz (Vice-Rector for Student Affairs), Ms. Marzena Szlosek-Starzak (manager of the „Kredka” Student Dormitory) and Mr. Łukasz Zembrzuski (head of the Social Responsibility Office) from the University of Wrocław for their support in implementing the project and enabling us to visit „Kredka”.

On August 24th, Maciek Wlazło (a well-known city guide and author of the BEARD OF BRESLAU blog) led us on a guided tour of the legendary airport on the Grunwaldzka Axis. "Stories and Myths Surrounding the Construction of the Airport at Grunwaldzka Square" is a walk during which we learned what led to the construction of the runway at Grunwaldzka Square, its consequences, and learned the behind-the-scenes details of the plans to demolish the Grunwaldzka Axis.

On August 31, Joanna Majczyk (architect, assistant professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, researching 20th-century architecture) led the "Archiwalk around Grunwaldzki Square in the footsteps of great plans from the second half of the 20th century", during which she told us about the socialist realist plans for the development of Grunwaldzki Square.

On September 23rd, a press printing workshop led by Majka Dokudowicz (artist and graduate of the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław) took place on the University of Wrocław campus. As part of the event, we used German ornaments from tenement house facades and printed them ourselves.

On September 28th, Ewa Pluta (curator and art historian, professionally associated with the Wrocław City Museum and the Art Transparent Foundation) led "On the Connection between Architecture and People – Defunct Buildings and Important People" – a walk along the trail of buildings that were demolished for the airport, along with the rest of the Kaiserstrasse development. The now-vanished architecture provided an opportunity for reflection and remembrance of the extraordinary women and men associated with them.

On October 5th, Joanna Mielewczyk (journalist and creator of the "Kamienice" radio series and book) was our guide, tracing the history of people living in the area. "In the Footsteps of Pre- and Post-War Residents of Wrocław" was a moving encounter with former neighbors, but also an opportunity to learn about people of German descent who remained in the city after World War II.

The series of walking tours concluded with Krzysztof Ziental (art historian, monument and conservation expert), who, despite the unfavorable weather, led us on October 19th in the footsteps of the architecture of Krystyna and Marian Barski. While the walk, "From Auditorium to Auditorium, or a Walk Along Grunwaldzki Square in the Footsteps of Modernist Architecture," didn't end at the auditorium, we did have the opportunity to visit the Kredka Student Dormitory, which isn't something we often do!

Our invitation to share neighborhood memories is still open! We want to explore the untold story of Grunwaldzki Square, as seen through the eyes of its residents. We're all ears and invite you to share your anecdotes, sentimental stories, and opinions about the history, character, and culture of our neighborhood from 1940 to the present. Not only current residents of Grunwald can participate in these neighborhood stories, but also those who spent their childhood or youth in the neighborhood, or who remember it from archival photographs and stories.

We accept interview applications in two ways:

The condition for participation in the talks conducted by the Ładne Historie Foundation is the acceptance of the provisions regulations available at the following link: bit.ly/NIEOPOWIEDZIANA-HISTORIA-wywiady-regulamin.

History of the housing estate told in different ways

The first six months of the project "Plac Grunwaldzki – an untold story" are behind us! Thanks to funding from the EVZ Foundation, we are learning about the fate of today's main street in Grunwald (Plac Grunwaldzki Street) – from the creation of the airport during Festung Breslau, through the "great void" that lasted for many years and the various plans for its development, right up to the present day. With this project, we want, on the one hand, to commemorate the tragedy that befell several thousand people on Kaiserstrasse in 1945 and, on the other, to invite you to tell us how the demolition of the buildings on the section between the then Adolf Hitler Brücke (now the Szczytnicki Bridge) and the Kaiserbrücke (now the Grunwaldzki Bridge) affected your lives.

We have always been most interested in stories viewed from many different angles, stories which are not actually about historical truth but about the collective memory. When, during one of our guided tours, we stopped by the D1 building of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, a discussion arose between the participants about the exact location of the Evangelical Martin Luther Church (Luther Kirche). This building hasn't existed since March 1945 when it was demolished while preparations for a temporary airport. Some remember playing on the ruins of the church further towards the Grunwaldzki Bridge, while others point to a specific spot near the D1 building. Human memory is fallible, but these subtle differences are of great value for us. We want to know how the void that gave rise to the name of our housing estate is remembered by the local community.

Information about the EVZ Fund and the information about it below, Грнвальдської осі – від створення летовища у Festung Breslau, Cherez “great порожнечу”, що тривала довгі роки, та різні плани її розвитку, until a sunny day.

Here's what's going on and what's going on true, (Luther Kirche), 1945 year in construction industry In memory of how they played in the past Grunwaldský bridge, Людська пам'ять може бути помилковою, but for us саме ці тонкі відмінності мають велику цінність – ми хочемо з'ясувати, як місцева the group was named after the Germans massive.

In my opinion, under the supervision of the doctor Martyr Caesarea (proctor of студентських питань), пані Мажені Шльосек-Старжак (керівнику student building "Kredka") та пану Лукашу Зембруському (керівнику офісу соціальної відповідальності) з Вроцлавського universite for підтримку проекту та можливість about "Crayons".
