This fall, we invite you to two musical events at Wrocław universities. We begin on October 16th with a meeting with Agata Zemla at "Węgielek," the acoustic chamber at Wrocław University of Science and Technology. This is another installment of "Sounds of Grunwaldzki Square," in which we listen together to the neighborhood and discover its lesser-known locations.
Plac Grunwaldzki has a musical history. Many people remember the concerts and meetings at Alibi, and later at the Academy, which operated in the same location. After their closure, the opportunities to attend a musical event close to home or university diminished. However, the estate's potential remained: an academic environment, people interested in new sounds, and spaces that could become venues for musical encounters.
It is from this belief that our project arose. We want Grunwald to provide more opportunities to listen to and explore contemporary music together. We also want to discover the sounds that accompany us every day, though they often escape our attention.
As Zuzanna Pawlak, the curator of the project, reminds us Academic Radio LUZ, Canadian composer and researcher R. Murray Schafer, emphasized the unique acoustic character of each space. "The Grunwald estate has such a unique sonic signature," Pawlak emphasizes.
It's created by the everyday rhythms of the place where different generations live, study, and work. There are people here who have been associated with Grunwald for decades, as well as those who have just arrived to study. We want "Sounds of Grunwald Square" to give them the opportunity to meet and explore the neighborhood together – also through music they haven't been exposed to before.
This year's edition is titled "Hidden." We'll invite you to places we pass by on our daily walks, but which we usually don't visit. Thanks to our collaboration with universities, spaces used for everyday learning will become venues for musical events.
The first will take place on October 16, 2026, at 7:00 PM. Agata Zemla, a composer, performer, and biologist with ties to Wrocław, will perform in the Wrocław University of Science and Technology's acoustic chamber, known as "Węgielek." We are planning a second meeting in November at the Medical University. Details will be announced in a future announcement.
Participation in the event with Agata Zemla is free. Registration is required as space is limited at Węgielek. Register via application form or by phone: 71 757 15 87 or 573 815 456 (also SMS).
